Google is experimenting a lot these days and as part of it they have come up with displaying Bread Crumbs in organic search engine rankings. The idea behind this is allow user to understand where he is been taken to and where he will ultimately land. Currently it is on testing phase and will be displayed for specific search results and not every indexed URL in Google data base
This is what Google has said on it:
Some web addresses help you understand the structure of the site and how the specific page fits into the site hierarchy. For example, consider a search for the biography of Vint Cerf (Google’s Internet Evangelist). The URL for one result, “www.google.com/corporate/execs.html,” shows that the page is located in a page about “execs,” under “corporate,” which is on the “google.com” site. This can provide valuable context when deciding whether to click on the result.
One thing is pretty clear that Google as always has emphasized on having clean and uncomplicated hierarchy so that pages can be properly indexed to give web searchers what they want in no time. And to promote this concept further they have come up with this. Google have also used variation for using bread crumbs for some results bread crumbs are displayed below the Title and for others they are displayed in place of URL.
But the point of consideration is if you want user to directly go to desired page having bread crumb may not be a good idea as he might not land on actual page and may be left strangled for information. Whether providing breadcrumb is successful or not from Search Engine point of view or from user friendliness point of view will only be known when results are there after this test is completed.
